Anyone in Perth using NSW?

Postby pseudechisbutleri » Wed 06 Mar, 2019 9:11 pm

I've been having param trouble with my reef tank, and many other reefers have pointed out that NSW is likely to be the issue. My LFS sells NSW, and the params are:

SG: 1.030
Magnesium: 1500
Calcium: 500
Alkalinity: At the LFS, I've gotten an alk of 9.9, but the water I collect has an alk of around 5.5 to 6.

Other reefers have urged me to use an artificial salt mix, and I think I will, but I'm just curious to see if anyone has used saltwater from Vebas Aquariums or just NSW from off the Perth coast in general.

I get mine delivered in lots of 1000l at a time from a well known local supplier in Fremantle. Most recent was about 3 weeks ago - which i then used for a 50% wc, which is a bit over 300l... havent had any issues of late. They also supply a lot of the LFS around Perth.

I am surprised at the levels of macros you have described... seems a bit higher than I would expect. Normally the mag would be closer to 1290, ca 380 for the local nsw.

As you have said it will often be a little heavier and may require an ro top up, but that is the only issue you ever really come up against.

Yup, Denis from Freo Ocean Farms.

Do you know if the water is treated before being delivered? And have you had better luck with corals with NSW or ASW?

I cant comment much on ASW, as I only used it when first starting out, so any issues I had were probably my own. As for NSW, I know a some very successful reefers around perth who use the same supplier without issue. The only thing they do to their water is sand filtration as far as I know.

I believe that it in the end, it doesn’t matter what your preferred method of providing salt water is. So long as you maintain stable parameters, that are not extreme, you will have happy critters.

Same with me, I only used ASW when I first started and I converted to NSW when I ran out of salt.

Contemplating whether or not I should use NSW or ASW, I started a thread on Nano Reef and the users there determined NSW to be the reason for my woes, saying something about temperate NSW being unsuitable for reefs and adjusting params to reef tank levels causing die off in the plankton.

I couldn’t comment with smaller/nano tanks, but that certainly hasn’t been my experience with larger tanks.

I currently have an 80l coldwater, 20l reef and 8l reef, reckon that NSW is the logistically easier choice for the 80l, the 20l and 8l can use either NSW or ASW. I reckon that NSW is the best source of water when easily collected, provided that it’s clean ;)
