Drews 2 Ft Cube

Postby Drew HP » Mon 04 Mar, 2019 7:16 pm

Keeping a journal to help me set things up! And keep a record. Please add any thoughts or suggestions as I am a complete newbie again due to 6 years without a tank!

I had a couple of tanks previously but never enough to actually focus on. The wife is keen on the hobby so thats a bonus!

Tank: 2ft w x 2ft d x 2 (and a bit) ft high, corner weir with sump in stand

Skimmer: Reef Octopus HOB
Lights: MARS (Seeking upgrade to something better once i cam afford it!)
Return pump: 5000l/h
Other equupment:
- heater
- fluval wavemaker
- UV Steriliser

Sump: sump has 2 chambers, the return flows into a filter sock, under that in the first chamber i have sand and base rock - i want to grow macro algae there but want to do more research before diving in. The skimmer hangs off the edge so doesnt take up any of the very limited sump space.

Livestock:
- pair of clowns (yet to decide which)
- sand sifting goby
- others - yet to agree with wife but open to suggestions.
- soft corals (huge fan of hammer/frogspawn, elegance, morphs and rics)
- red line cleaner shrimp

Added water to start cycling today.. here we go!

Also - how do i add pictures?

Hi Drew,
Sound like your off to a good start.

Posting pics takes a bit of practice on here..
You will need to use a third party image hosting site, such as imugar, and then copy and past the location between the ‘img’ tags. Or post the url between the url tags.
I would suggest to try and then edit your post if it dosent work. (If you enter the links and it dosent work I will try and edit for you to show you the correct format)

You can also post pics from FB (not Insta apparently) if you open the image and copy the url location.

I run a sump with a skimmer chamber flowing into a fuge, no sand or rock necessary IMO it will just get messy and need to be cleaned just have a ball of chaeto and a 28w grow light sitting on top. This takes care of alot of my nitrates and phos and also maintains a healthy population of pods. As for light i would say a kessil 360x is the best led for that size or an ai prime

Ive got a bta nem and a pair of clowns they are now hosted in, a few hammers and shrooms. Ive got a 4 month old tank and managed to mature it pretty quickly. I used continuum bacter gen m to kick start the cycling process and used some seeded live rock from my lfs

Just checked and you cant link from insta.. sorry for the poor advice! for the image to show in your post, rather than a link, it has to be a image hosting site or FB.

Cheers,

Hi All!
Whilst im now cycling ive been working lots out with flow and lighting.

Ive got an issue with temperature, im between 28 and 29 constantly and wont go below.

Ive tried :
- disconnect skimmer for 24 hours (no change)
- disconnect UV steriliser for 48 hrs (no change)
- remove heater (ive also totally replaced the heater) (no change)
- replaced thermometer (turns out they were both showing the same)

My concern is that it could be the return pump or it could just be the environment.

Is this temperature range going to cause me massive issues? I have no fish or coral yet and want to sort this before doing so. Any suggestions(short of a chiller) for how to test the problem would be greatly appreciated!!!
