1)How Long have you been in the hobby (eg. start date or length of time or a whole paragraph or two on your history in the hobby)?

I have been around aquariums all my life with my family always having a freshwater tank in the house. For approx. the last 20 years I have owned various freshwater systems, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that the marine bug hit. My dream was to always have a marine set-up so I started stalking Reef Central and MASA and finally got a 3x2x2 in January 2010, so I have had a reef tank for almost three years.  I still run two freshwater tanks and a ghetto saltwater tank in the garage.

2a) What size is your winning tank, dimensions and litres ?

Tank size is 5 x 2 x 2 which is approx. 570 litres

2b) Any reasons for that size tank?

When I decided to upgrade from the 3x2x2, the new tank size was a difficult decision, I had to size the tank to suit the space available in the living room, I would of preferred to have 2.5’ wide, but the tank would have encroached into the room to much.

2c) How long has this tank been setup?

The tank was running in December 2011

Image

3) Anything you want to say about your stand?

The choice of tank and stand was that it had to intergrate with the living room, we went with a Gary Maher built tank and stand, the stand is stained to match the other furniture.

4) Do you have a sump and/or refugium? If so, what size?

I have sump 3 x 1.5 x 1, split into three chambers – skimmer, refugium with miracle mud and macro lit 24/7, return section. I have recently slowed the flow through my sump to allow more time for the water to interact with the skimmer and macro, I’m unsure of any improvement at the moment.

5) Filtration eg. amount of live rock, sand bed or bare bottom, mechanical filtration etc?

Approx 60kg of live rock, about 25kg was transferred from the old tank, I have approx. 1” of 1-2mm coral sand.

Image

6) Do you have a skimmer? If so, what?

Bubble King Mini160, which according to the specification this skimmer is underrated for the tank, but I have never had a problem with it and my reading have always been low.

7) Water flow/movement (powerheads etc)?

2 tunze 6105 plus controller, I am a real Tunze fan they are silent which is essential due to the tank being in the living room.
The return pump is a Red Dragon Speedy 3, I originally had an Ocean Runner 6500 but it was to noisy for the room, again the Speedy is silent and it also allows me to vary the flow through the sump and save power. The return manifold is T’ed off to run 2 FBF’s one with carbon one with rowaphos.

8) Lighting, type and times?

ATI Sunpower 6 x 80W tubes, wow these are good light. Initially I was only using 4 tubes but now all 6 are running. Light cycle is dawn/dusk 12pm till 9.30pm daylight cycle 1pm till 9pm

Tube selection at the moment is from front to back Blue Plus, Purple Plus, Blue Plus, Aqua Blue Special, Blue Plus, Aqua Blue Special

Image

9) Other equipment such as auto topoff, Ca reactor etc?

Topoff is manual at the moment, Kamoer KSP-F03 dosing unit

10) Water parameters?

Nitrates – 0to5ppm
Alkalinity – 7to8dkH
Calcium – 420to440ppm
Phosphate – 0to0.05
Temp – 25to27degC

11) Additives and conditioners (kalk, phophate removers etc.)

Calcium chloride
Sodium bicarbonate
Magnesium chloride
100% marine safe AA dosed after water change
Reef Roids after water change
Activated carbon (changed monthly)
Rowaphos (changed as phos rises)

Image

12) Fish stock. Preferably scientific name followed by common name if known.

Yellow tang Zebrasoma flavescens
Blue tang Paracanthurus hepatus
Kole tang Ctenochaetuc strigosus
Mystery wrasse Pseudocheilinus ocellatus
Copperband butterfly Chelmon rostratus
Orchid dottyback  Pseudochromis fridmani
2 x onyx clowns Amphiprion percula
5 x Vanderbilt chromis Chromis vanderbuilti

13) Coral stock. As above, scientific and common names if known ?

I am not very good with common names never mind scientific, so I got some help from a reefing friend

Various Euphyllia spp. (E. ancora, E. parancora, E. glabrescens, E. divisa)
Various Fungiidae
Various Zoanthidae
Acanthastrea lordhowensis
Acanthophyllia deshayesiana
Acropora Formosa
Acropora tenuis
Catalayphyllia jardinei
Cladiella sp.
Cynarina lacrymalis
Duncanopsammia axifuga
Echinophyllia aspera
Favites spp
Lobophyllia flabelliformis
Pocillopora damicornis
Sarcophyton trocheliophorum
Scolymia australis
Stylophora pistillata
Trachyphyllia geoffroyi
Xeniidae

14) Other Inverts. As above, scientific and common names if known.

I have no other inverts because the fish think they are food, I am fortunate enough to have a ready supply of live glass shrimp which I feed them regularly
I have plagues of turbo snails and two strombus which do a great clean up job

Image

15) Maintenance such as water changes, cleaning etc?

I have long been an admirer of Acro Al’s tank, so I have implemented his large regular water change schedule to my tank, I live 5mins from Currumbin Creek.
I currently change approx. 350litres a week and my tank has never looked better.
The glass is cleaned when required, which for me is almost every day because I love clean glass!
The skimmer and pumps get viniger dipped and cleaned every 4 months

16) Acknowledgments and any other comments you would like to make that don't apply elsewhere.

Many people have helped me with the hobby, but in particular I would like to acknowledge the help and support from Darren at Reef Secrets. He has given me great sound advice from the very beginning, and I owe much of my success to him.

Also like to thank everyone on MASA who has followed and commented on my tank, and especially the guys in MASQ. The forum has been a lifeline and it’s great to be part of a community full of like-minded people willing to share not just their successes but also their failures.
