1) How Long have you been in the hobby?

I set up my first marine tank in 2008, a 3x2x2, a great beginning.
The tank and I evolved from soft corals through to stony corals.

I bought my first house a year ago. This ultimately inspired me to build a bigger system-

Image

2a) What size is your winning tank, dimensions and litres?

It's 6’x2.5’x22" (1800x750x550) = not quite 750L.
It was built at Global Glassworks (VIC), thank you again Rudy and Loc! A true pleasure to deal with.
Starphire Glass, an external overflow/weir, laminated/double euro brace for strength enough to get away with 10mm glass for all but the base.

2b) Any reasons for that size tank?

Because ;)

I was keen on wide, deep and shallow.
Um'd and ah'd over a squarer tank but couldn't be built as cost effectively. Plus the useable footprint is bigger, lighting a bit simpler.
Also, worked out this was the biggest I was keen to go from a water management perspective.

2c) How long has this tank been setup?

Filled in December’11.

Image

Image

3) Anything you want to say about your stand?

It's modeled on both Noah's Ark and the Great Wall of China.
Structural pine framing tied in to 100x100 cypress pine legs.
At 7’x3’ it’s oversize and over engineered for the tank, but doubles as the bar in the Man Cave.
It also provides an invaluable work bench and something to kneel on while working.
The stand is 1100 high making the top roughly eye level.

Cladding is salvaged hardwood fence palings, the bar top is my own little slice of beach.
It is screaming for bar stools.

Image

4) Do you have a sump and/or refugium? If so, what size?

Sump is 4’x18”x18” with 3 sections for skimmer and pumps, fuge, and return, lit with a DIY Rapid LED kit.
I stuck the baffles in with 50mm gaps to allow good flow.
Macro algae grows on a sheet of egg crate like a scrubber, the water flows up and through a sort of turf mat.

5) Filtration eg. amount of live rock, sand bed or bare bottom, mechanical filtration etc?

There’s around 60kgs of thriving rock and critters in the display and another 10-15 in the sump.
Tank is currently bare bottom (likely to change soon).
Filtration via a skimmer and a couple of fluid bed filters.

Image

Image

6) Do you have a skimmer? If so, what?

Deltec SC2060.

7) Water flow/movement (power heads etc)?

3 x Tunze 6105’s.
2 driven by a Profilux 2 (the basic one!) one on a Tunze single controller with a EcoTech battery backup.
Return pump is a Laguna 7500.

Image

Image

8) Lighting, type and times?

ATI Powermodule 8x80, running ATI tubes (F->B), Blue Plus, AquaBlue Special, Blue Plus, Blue Plus, Purple Plus, Blue Plus , AquaBlue Special, Blue Plus.
Run a Blue/Purple Channel from 2PM to Midnight. The other 6 tubes are on from 1730~2230.
Also run a Profilux SimuStick which is cool, but a little small for a Six Footer!

9) Other equipment such as auto top off, Ca reactor etc?

Tunze Osmolator looks after evap.
Bubble Magus dosing unit looks after Alk, Cal & Mag.
A little Otto FBF for RowaPhos, a big Octopus Reactor for Carbon.
I’m in the process of setting up another big reactor, I’ll fill it with bigger pieces of coral rubble or reactor media.

I have a 3kw solar system up on the roof.
My loose maths and bizarre comprehension of electricity bills suggests most days I export enough power to the grid to cover what the tank uses (then some) prior to the lights coming on at 2PM.

10) Water parameters?

The important ones for me..
Alk 8.5
Cal 400
Mag 1400
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0.02

11) Additives and conditioners (kalk, phosphate removers etc.)

Alkalinity - Bicarb, Calcium - Pool CaCl, Magnesium - Epsom Salts & Kent Magnesium
Carbon and RowaPhos in separate fluid reactors.
Have very recently started to drip a little Brightwell Aquatics Phosphate E - so far so good..

12) Fish stock.

Scientific names are a bit much for me, but I do like to try trace things that are sort of related.

Zebrasoma flavescens Yellow Tang
Zebrasoma scopas Scopas Tang
Acanthurus leucosternon PowderBlue Tang

Salarias fasciatus Lawnmower Blenny
Neocirrhites armatus Flame Hawkfish
Siganus vulpinus Foxface Rabbitfish
Pseudanthias randalli Randall's Anthias

13) Coral stock.

The tank is Acropora SPS dominated, with a number of Echinophyllia Chalice and Montipora.
Soft corals / LPS are Duncanopsammia axifuga Duncans, Acanthastrea Acans and Zoanthids Zoos and a couple of fairly large Turbinaria

Image

14) Other Inverts.

There are countless Trochus and Turbo fluctuosa snails scooting about, and one Haliotis Abalone.
Under the rocks are four or five Ophiuroidea Brittle Starfish (black and grey), the biggest is a hitch hiker from my first box of live rock some 4 years ago.
It's nearly a foot across from tip to tip.
There are two or three Lysmata wurdemanni Peppermint Shrimps in there too.

15) Maintenance such as water changes, cleaning etc?

I change 75 litres a week, plus about 75 litres RO top up covers the 10% theory. I do a bigger 150 litre change once a month.
I use ASW given Melbourne bay water quality is how you say, questionable. I store and recycle my RO grey water.
I drag the magnet over the glass every couple of days, and try clean the skimmer three times a week.
All pumps/gear removed and cleaned every other month.

I have always been pretty keen on testing, I do my 'critical list' at least once a week.

Image

16) Acknowledgments and any other comments you would like to make that don't apply elsewhere.

Straight off the Bat, the Deester and Axela Billy Holiday, I can not thank enough in helping me put this all together.
Over the years Ernie and David at Reeflections Aquarium (Moorabbin) have been nothing but great guys to talk, trade, and have a laugh with.
Ben at the Age of Aquariums, a dead set legend when it comes to not only sales, but after sales service.

Above all though, the countless amazing systems and their operators in this here forum, and the awesome folks who make MASOV.
