Lin's 18.44L pico - Neptune's Garden - shutdown

Introduction:
I was thinking about to get a pico tank for softie and zoa then heard this competition.

A little bit of myself, only start to reef last year and quickly from 40l to 80l now i have a 3 x 1.5 x 2 tank that has a mix of sps, lps and some softies. My sps seems to be happy at the moment (taking a lot of Cal and Alk) and i am starting in softie fragging and mini maxi collecting and propagation (if i ever get my hands dirty).

The idea of this pico. Coming from my planted tank experience that people often will aquascape to some sort of theme. so here are some of my thoughts of this Neptune's Garden pico. Hopefully i can turn this into real with my noob skill.

There will be two focus for the tank.
1 - varies goni frag around a nano torch - Torch will be acting as a water fountain and goni will be the flower pot (obviously)
2 - varies zoa frag around a dallas frag and pocci frag - dallas and pocci will be the tree and zoas are the wild flower
on top of those, if possible i want to grow a tiny star mat to cover the bottom of the tank.

System Type:
Mixed reef with sps, lps and zoa

PICO System:

PICO Tank:
28 x 28 x 25 cm with inbuilt back chamber for filtration. Cody is going to help me build one.

PICO Volume:
18.44L

PICO Lighting:
going to do some DIY
Currently design is use 11 3w led

Cody has helped me with the dimension of the tank. this is then send to my other mate to cut and polished.

Also talked with one of the reef fellow in HK and he is going to help me to DIY a light. He will be coming over for Xmas and will bring the light over for me. :-)

Looks pretty good

couple of things:
back chamber
1st or 2nd need to be 6 x 10 inside. i have ordered a mini skimmer that is 5 x 9
3rd need to also be 6 x 10 to hose the return pump.

i am finding out the size of the return pump hole

That should all be an easy fit lin, we can work through that together. Do you want to try a mini filter sock for the first compartment? I have wanted to try making one for a while

Glass is finally ready i will be pick up this weekend and drop it off the Cody to stick them together.

Ordered a ATO - some chinese brand but it is infrared not floating switch. $45 - so i will see how it goes.
Also ordered a SUNSUN aquarium controller. not a fancy one but it allow me control lights, pump, skimmer, heating/cooling, got a wireless controller that shows all kinds of info. $55 so can't complain too much.

so some updates from me.
This the all the gear i brought but i didn't end up using half of them.
after discuss with Cody, i decide go skimmer less and may run some macro algae and phosphate remover in media bag to control the nutrients

Image

Pick up the tank from Cody yesterday and setting up on my desk. Fresh water test find a small leak so i patched up with some silicon so waiting it to dry ATM.
the blue towel is where is leak is.
Image

Hooked up the SUNSUN controller so far i haven't configured anything but plugged in the return pump.
Image

The back filtering chamber
Image

Cut a foam bottom and level the tank up

Another update.
Holiday season does give me more time to do what i want to do.
Had the tank wet with saltwater on the 31th the last day of the year. When the fireworks was on i am still busy working with the tank.

Got my controller configured. It is monitoring the tank temperature and controlling the light for me. It also give me the ability to turn on and off things with a touch screen button.
Image

Make myself an eggcrate media basket. lower section will be matrix and upper section will be macro algae
Image

the lower section is filled up with matrix in a media bag. i am going a partially zeovit system so this will be used in stead of the zeolites.
Image

Don't have a big enough one piece eggcrate but this will do as a bottom to reduce contact area between rock and sand. Yeah, i will be putting in some sand once cycle finish.

Waters in and i didn't use live rock. instead i putty up 2 piece of dry rock.I seeded the piece in my big tank for 2 days so maybe not really seeded..lol
i will be put in couple of small piece later on.
iphone is so annoying that make everything looks blue.
Using a masking tape to make my water level will hook up my smart ATO tonight

Because this will be a partially zeovit tank so i choose to use zeovit 14 days cycle method to cycle it

Day 1 dosage
ZEObak: 1 ml
ZEOstart: 2 ml
ZEOfood: 0.6ml

Day 2 & 3 should be dosing break

I will be making up some low concentrate zeovit product myself for this pico. Because most zeovit product are using 1 drop/100L so will use 1 part zeovit product with 4 parts RO water.

Got the smart ATO installed. it seems it is a bit too powerful for this pico. Water level goes over a bit when it is automatically filled up
Image

Also home made some low concentrate zeovit product. They are 1 part of zeovit product with 4 parts of RO water. Now i can start my normal dosing....lol

i have not read up the post that you are referring to. but my understanding is food7 has more/varies amino acids that coral need; it has has some NO3 and NO4 so it feeds bacteria. There for i believe it is a better choice when cycling.

sponge power is supposed to be used to replace food7 and i will use SP after the cycle. But because i am mainly keeping gonis and zoas in this pico i was hoping food7 can replace AA and i don't really want NO3 and NO4 are both 0. They need to be close to 0 but not 0. if that doesn't work out then i may try goni power and acro power.

Even with normal zeovit tank, use some Food7 actuall can improve colouration. i think i read that somewhere on zeovit forum.

Day 4
Bak Low: 1 drop
Food7 Low: 1 drop
Start3 Low: 0.2ml x 2 (made a mistake here the syringe i use divide 1ml into 5 but i thought it divided by 10 :-))

On day 2 i did put 2 small piece of live rock from my 3f and today i notice there are few mysis shrimp running/swimming around the bottom of the tank. After lights out i see heaps of those little ones. Maybe the system has been balanced or because i mainly used dry rock so the cycle will take longer??

i will throw couple of tough sps frag in tomorrow.

Day 5
Bak Low: 1 drop
Food7 Low: 1 drop
Start3 Low: 0.1ml x 2

I have seen pods on my glass now so i put in one of my toughest SPS frag in and also the famous Dallas frag. The mini quad colour torch i have is also now in the pico now.
lights are out today. i will update some photos tomorrow.

Sounds good to me, G. Alexander told me not to because i am not stable low nutrients yet, i was unsure about during the cycle tho

Very cool gear you got too Lin how's that controller going..??

a stupid controller i have to say. you can't control your UV (if you have any) or wavemaker if you put it into auto mode. it will turn both on 1 hour before the lights are scheduled on and only run for half an hour. and both temperature control power stock are only control heating rather than one heating and one cooling.

I have now moved all the frags i want put in this pico in. i haven't glue them as i want to see if there will be any issues. Current FTS

Day 7
Bak Low: 1 drop
Food7 Low: 1 drop
Start3 Low: 0.1ml x 2

i have huge amount of mysis shrimp after i transfered those zoa frags over. i put sand bed in and glued all the goni frag. will be rescape all the zoa frag and glue them tomorrow.

Update tomorrow with some photos once i done that.
