AZZASN's 800mm reef theif

Postby azzasn » Sun 03 Jan, 2010 3:14 pm

Introduction:
Hi all, I have been a regular forum user and not so much at posting so i thought i would start my first TJ since im up to my third marine tank. My first marine tank was a 8x2x2 and at the same time had a 2.5' reef, I decided to downsize due to costs of power and how much all the coral to fill a tank that size would be. So the 800mm cube began!

System Objectives:
To have a colourfull and optimum habitat for the for all the occupants in my tank

System Type: Mainly sps dominent, few clams and have a love for colourfull acans.

Display System:

Strike up Date: Prepared planning in december 2008, water first went in on 21 september 2009.

Display Tank: 800mm cube

Display Lighting: Single Lumenbright mini reflector with 400 watt coralvue e-ballast, 400 watt 12k reeflux globe. Supplemented with 2 x twin 24w t5's.

Stand: Stand was built by whoever the LFS got to build it. 1m high stand, I painted it in black 2pac and put a big piece of black perspex in the door.

Hood: As above

Sump: 2' sump in 3 sections, not alot of room.

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water

Display Water circulation: Tunze TS24 kit + vortech mp40w

Return Pump: Eheim compact + 5000

Skimmer: Vertex Alpha 250

Evaporation Top Up:Auto topup by Tunze osmalator

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition: dosing pumps

Alkilinity Addition: dosing pumps

Current Water Chemistry:
Nitrates: 0
Phosphates: 0.00 with hanna checker +-
Alkalinity: 8.2
Calcium: 420
Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.026

Ok guys thats it, another objective that ill try my hardest to do is try and start this system with sps frags, we all know how hard that will be to do, i pretty much have to stay away from the LFS.

Ill put up some pics soon when figure it out.

Looks Good all nice and clean .. stil a virgin :)

If you have not been in marine before just some tips for you i have come across when building my tank

1. Those union valves get stuck and sieze up making hard to adjust
2. Don't use any metal in the sump area, if you can avoid it such as hose joiners and cabinet hinges. They just rust within 3 months.

I love your halide it looks a beaut!

Pic of the fresh rock all thrown in, I got a small clam about 2cm long in the rock but it didnt end up survivng the cycle. Heaps of other good things on the rock aswell.

This is the first attempt at aquascaping, its different to that now because it fell. Have kept most of it off the sand and used a couple acrylic rods in a few spots.

2 clams i got off a mate, one on left is a maxima and the right i think is a crocea.

Thanks for the tips, theres no metal apart from the top clamp that you can see on the return line and door hinges which i plan to replace due to the door saging a bit. I dont have any submerged metal.

Do you mean the check valves or the ball valves?

Got a 2 x IBC's out back with NSW, do a 20l water change every few days, it only takes a minute. Put 20l in the system then i plug the hose onto the syphon and remove 20l.
Also got a hammerhead magnet with blade which works a treat on the glass.
I run carbon and phosban in a reactor aswell.

Ive got a yellow tang in there now combating the hair algae.
Also got about 9 sps frags, man its going to take ages to grow out.

Not going to add to many more fish, maybe just some percula's.

How did you go getting all your rock?

Got some clowns today, they were given to me off a mate. The yellow tang has left them alone, I thought he would have had a go at them.
The 3 clowns have been together for 3 years now, living happily! now i just hope they are not going to host on a clam incase they harass it.

ImageImage

In the hopefully not to distant future i would like to set up a big frag tank that runs inline with my display, Im thinking anywhere from a 4'x2'.5x12" to a 8'x2.5'x12" and because it runs inline with the display I wont need to get a new chiller or dosing pumps.
Only problem is I live in a rental and the worst thing is moving all the tanks when I leave.

Have been busy lately on the tank and have got some new SPS from Jason Angels tank pulldown, about 7-8 people all went round to his joint to do the group buy of all his livestock.
I came out with about 13 new SPS including the large Dallas which has a monti growing at the base. I now have alot of frags that need to grow out and the tank should be looking fairly full up.
I still havent got the doser yet so have been keeping up alk and ca manually with kalk and every now and again it needs bicarb or damprid.

I did purchase an ATC 800+ but it does not seem to be as accurate as i would like, it seems to stay on 26.2 while my other thermometers are differing in temp and swinging slightly while the ATC stays put.

Start off with a full tank shot

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys!

Always up for good Acans Jai, Get that chiller working?

For circulation ive got a Tunze TS24 kit but in the future i want to get another 6100 in there to make some more turbulance. It is hard to keep the sand down now. The sand was epoxied down before the tank was setup so i didnt get the glass showing, all the sand is now settled in the back half.

Re: AZZASN's 800mm reef theif

Bit of an update, I have hooked up the GHL dosing pumps to control my alk,ca and NaCL. This is working pretty well for me, I am still trying to acheive total stability but at the moment it is going good.

There was a bit of bryopsis about in the tank and have got rid of that by using REDSEA's method, which is Kent tech M in a syringe and squirt it over the B, I only squirted the B once and I used the tech M to get the mag back to NSW levels.
I couldnt beleive it when after a few days the B started to melt away, everywhere i read was that you had to raise up your Magnesium to levels around 1600 to make it dissapear but this isnt so in my case.

The flow in the tank doesnt seem to be enough for me with just 2 6100's so I have ordered a MP40w, so now will have a fair amount of random turn over. Over the past few weeks have slowly been sucking out the sand because my 1" thick even layer sand all got pushed to the back and ended up being 3" thick, Im sure this would have caused problems later on so decided to remove it.
So now for nitrate reduction I am employing a RDSB in a 20 liter bucket and use the return from the chiller for flow.

Just found your journal then. The 2pac cabinet and lighting set up is very nice. Defiently going to look at doing a 2pac job on my next one. Flow in this tank will be crazy with a vortech. Look forward to watching it progess.

Two new fish added on saturday, a sixline wrasse and a royal gramma.
When i put them in on saturday the was no fighting from the other fish which is unusual but i assume the next fish will cop a bit from these two.

Not to much has changed coral wise, i have only added a blue stag. I havent really been going to the LFS lately due to me thinking they wont have acro cause of the QLD weather.

Couple pics anyway.
