My 2 1/2' diameter X 3 1/2' circular tank

Postby Grant Rogers » Mon 14 Jul, 2008 9:44 pm

After working out that my old tank would have been better as a fresh water tank, it is time to upgrade. I'd been waiting months for a Reef Octopus Biolife that never arrived, and after not being able to wait much longer I decided on an unusual challenge.....

I've decided to try a circular tank with a central weir and a mini reef. The dimensions of the tank are: 680mm diameter and 1000mm tall.

The new tank should be quite interesting to set-up, so I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I hopefully will. *fingers crossed*

whoa. At a metre tall it's going to be pretty hard to light...

Hope it all comes to fruition.

I've decided to go with the glass option, mainly because it has a seam down the back. As I don't have power points at high level, I can mount the power cords for the lights to the seam and they won't be visible from the front.

Far out this sounds like its going to be one impressive looking tank Grant!

I guess for lighting you probably would go for a couple 1000 watt metal halides mate?

Far out looks awesome mate, but yeah its giving me a headache thinking about how you will maintain it!

Im thinking you should probably construct the liverock outside the tank into the structure you want and then place it in the tank very slowly!

Maybe add some sand first then the rock and then the rest of the sand to add stability to the structure.

What do you plan on keeping in it mate?

So this is what it will look like in the cabinet and i've got a 2100 L/hr pump to go in there as well. The only problem i've got is that the chiller will sit outside the cabinet, but I'm not too worried about that.

I'll have to source a skimmer soon as well but that can wait a week or two i think.

So here is my tank filled and with some livestock. At the moment my long tongs haven't arrived so I can't build up the live rock exactly how i want. Since my previous posts I've also upgraded the pump to a 4200l/h. Which seems to be working better. Will probably add some more live rock on the weekend and try to build it up a little bit.

Cool idea. I didn't realise how big it actually was until I saw the picture with the guy in it. Is there much distortion due to the round glass?

No there's not much distortion at all, less than I thought there would be which is good. I'd say if I got the acrylic option there would have been even less, but I chose the glass due to the ease of cleaning. With that height it needs to be as easy as it can be for cleaning.

I should have some more live rock going in this weekend.

I had a shocking time with fish dying in my last tank. Lost about $1500 worth. So this one I've eased into it and selected a few easier to keep ones. Been good so far. *fingers crossed* Plus if one dies there is a good chance I won't be able to get it out.

I'm looking at stocking a few more next week. Have you got any suggestions?

Well I lost my Royal Gramma yesterday, he got sucked into the power head. :bawling:
I've now had to place some more rocks and coral around the inlet so we don't see a repeat.

Cool tank and all, I do agree the tank is fairly small for some of those fish. Fish swim longitudinally!
