Jedi's 4x4x2.5 Cube Adventure Begins

Postby Jedi » Mon 13 Aug, 2007 12:51 pm

Hi All,

It has been a while since i've been around here. This damn work stuff is just not fun when you don't get time to do the things you like. But at least it helps you get the $$ to do the projects we all love to do... heheheh

A couple years ago I was getting feedback and suggestions on how to take on a Cube project.

By way of luck I have aquired the tank to start my project.

A mate of mine has been running this thing for about 4 years and always said if he was going to get rid of it, it would come my way. I got a phone call two weeks ago saying "It's here and waiting for you to pick up".

Picking this thing up wasn't an easy task. it took 4 Blokes to pick this thing up and get it on the back of the ute... and 3 of us to get the stand in the back of the ute also.

The stand is made from 1.5 inch square tubing and supported around the top with 3mm plate steel running full width and 150mm high.

The pics below show the tank being cleaned by my other half (yes I put her to work) and the stand that is currently upside down as I need to clean off all the rust and repaint.

See what you all think.. I have got to get one panel drilled so I can make a half height weir and will be using a 3 foot sump.

Yer Blags, Finally it can start.

Lots to do though should have the stand all sorted in a couple weeks if all goes to plan.

Standby for a 1000L water delivery to my joint. :D

Bill, Just been extremely busy with work, as for the cleaning, I used the excuse that I'm to heavy to jump in there and do it I might break the bottom......

Worked a treat.. but I did get a comment of "This is the First and LAST time i'm cleaning this tank" heheheheheh.

Will update with pics as I progress.

Thanks

I tried, but I can only fit my head in the nano, however, with some broken bones, I should be able to fit in the 2x2x2.

that's a great sized tank.
Would be perfect to putting in the middle of the room and have it viewable on all 4 sides.

The tank is 12mm Glass.

I was wanting to do a 360 degree veiwing tank with a center wier etc. but a couple panels have a few scratches and one panel is badly scratched so I will be making that one the rear panel.

Currently trying to work out the size for the wier and what size hole or holes to get drilled.

Can't wait for this weekend so I can get started on the stand.

How about a 50mm bulkhead. With that you can get some awsome flow through them. I have 2 in my weir but only need one, the other is ther just in case something blocks it.

Great tank, Jedi! You are truly a master to encouraging Mrs Jedi into the tank to clean it up ...

About the scratches, have a chat with one of the auto glaziers about how they do the windscreen chips ... you might be able to get some of their product. Alternatively, what about cutting out the panel and replacing it if that is practicable?

2 x 50mm standpipes narrowed to 40mm after the bulkhead will be right (1 x overflow standby). I have 2 x 40mm standpipes narrowed to 32mm ... one operates as the drain to the sump and fuge, and the other will feed the skimmer when I get around to connecting the pipes. The single 40mm standpipe operates the flow requirement for the Iwaki MX70R return pump without any problems.

Hey All,

Well I have kinda got a plan together for the plumbing and sump setup.

I always like to keep my sump setup very simple 3 chambers. 1st for overflow and skimmer, large middle section for DSB/Fuge, then 3 chamber for return pump. Seems to work quite well for me so Ill stick with it.

Tone:- Who did the 50mm holes for you? and where did you get the 50mm plumbing from? Aquariums R Us will only do 30mm holes. :(

I wanted to try avoid a full height wier in this one and the overflow box section wasn't easy to work out.

I have done up the follow plan for the plumbing and just wanted some feedback, mainly about the overflow box size, or any other suggestions.

Thanks

It might be worth getting your stand sand blasted and a good coat of paint at this time too?

If you are going to be doing dual weir box outlets anyway, I'd suggest you take a look at the Silent Overflow - Syphon and Backup Durso Overflow Design thread.

If you stick with your current drain locations (bottom of weir box) you will have a VERY noisy slurping noise. Having them too low will also prevent implementing even dursos to reduce the noise (as you need a minimum of an elbow connected on the inside of the bulkheads - pointed downwards).

Also, if you don't get your returns pretty much exactly even you will find that flow will favour one of the exits - I'd either suggest adding some inline full-bore valves to be able to balance these or considering an ocean motions device so that only one outlet is fed at a time.

Maybe change tank maker ... ArUS typically aren't that switched on to anything outside of their standard tanks as that is all that they know to build. I'd give Dennison over at MaryAnne's Aquarium a call ("Rainmun"). 50mm plumbing is available from Bunnies -- waste water grey pipe. But, I've got 40mm pipework on mine.
