Blue Ring Octopus Tank

G'day guys,

Firstly, just would like to mention that yes, I am aware of the risks associated with keeping blue rings. I currently work with this species in a zoological setting, so are well versed in precautions required to be taken in keeping such a species in captivity.

Basically my little tank journal will pretty much bean account of setting up a low cost, low maintenence, yet visually appealing aquarium for a single blue-ring, while hopefully maintaining excellent water quality. Should be abit of a challenge.

I have set aside $100 for this project so it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

For a tank I will be using an acrylic "critter carrier". Though these look tacky, they are relatively escape proof- something definately important when keeping this species. A sump will be constructed out of a large plastic tupperware container, with bio-balls and live rock for filtration, and possibly macro algae for nutrient export. At this stage i'm not planning on using a protein skimmer, however this may change as the tank is set up.

For safety reasons, no live rock will be in the actual display tank, however I will be using artificial rock background inside the tank. Hopefully this should look decent with a little algal cover eventually.

Anyway thats enough for the moment. Stay tuned!

Alex

Why no Live-Rock for safety reasons?

What are you planning on putting in the tank for the Octopus to shelter in?

Do you have any ideas on size of tank/sump and what pumps/heater/lights you are going to use?

$100 wont go far :nut:

Good luck, I look forward to see what you come up with.

Mark

p.s. You should put your location in your profile so we know where in Australia (or OverSeas) you are

G'day, thanks for your reply.

As for the no live rock in tank, basically I want to limit the number of possible hidey-holes to a select few spots to limit the risk of any un-expected suprises.

As for shelter/hides, the piece of artificial rock backing should provide enough shelter underneath ledges etc. I'll also put in a couple of shells to give the option for more hiding spots.

As for size of the tank and sump, im looking at having a combined water volume of about 25 litres. Nothing too big, but small enough to be abit of a challenge. Not too sure of specifics of equipment yet.

I'm definately looking forward to trying this out too, could be a total failure, but with abit of luck everything should go to plan. Put a location in my profile too.

Alex

This sounds really interesting- do you have any photos of the tank you're planning to use, or is it still in the 'design phase'?

Kristie,
in the initial post he said he was going to use a critter keeper. They are those plastic tanks you get from the warehouse or crazy's or if you're from perth, red dot. They usually have bright crazy coloured tops on them.

Yup, I know the ones, I was just having trouble picturing it as a tank- I have the sort of brain that needs pictures to understand things :D

wow dude thats messed up. i thought that if you touched them you die. or do they have to sting you?

I also thought these things were small, like the size of a 50 cent piece or something.

mines body was the size of a 50c piece, amazing creature, caught off the rocks in swansea, just lent a rod down and it grabbed on, and dropped off in bucket,
needless to say i was terrified of even walking past the tank without turning lights on and searching for him
would do it again in a heart beat
