Introduction:
Having moved on from a small RedSeaMax130 to a currently running frag/quarantine/hospital setup, we have decided to move to bigger better things. The tank that has been our inspiration is without a doubt Pete & sue's stunning Reef build.( viewtopic.php?f=145&t=200230 )

System Objectives: This is to be our centerpiece at the entry to our home, dividing from the loungeroom. Apart form the hours and hours of sitting watching another goal is to educate our young kids and hopefully get them involved and wanting to learn.

System Type: Mixed Reef sps and lps with loads of beautiful fish.

Display System:

Strike up Date:30/6/2012

Display Tank: 7ft x 2.5ft x 2ft

Display Lighting: Illumagic 'S'

Stand: A very heavy timer/sheeted stand. Whiteboard interior , all siliconed and sealed. 16 powerpoints

Hood: To be made of lightweight aluminium with hinged cladding for easy access.

Sump: 5ft x 2ft x 2ft.

Refugium: Small DSB and Macro area before skimmer chamber. JNS alpha 2 biopellet reactor

Refugium Lighting:

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water

Display Water circulation: 4 vortech mpwes40's

Return Pump: sicce multi 5800lph return

Skimmer: Vortex Alpha 200

Evaporation Top Up:Auto topup via tunze osmolator

Chiller: Looking very strongly at getting a Teco TC20

Chemical Support:

Calcium Addition: Currently using Redsea via dosing pump

I am after opinions on the following.

Power Cone 250i Skimmer

Laguna Max-Flo 16000 return pump

LED Display Lighting
Illumagic Cree 60cm MASTER
Illumagic Cree 60cm SLAVE X 3

Teco TC20 chiller

This is the equipment list I have narrowed down to. I have done a bit of reading on each and read reviews, just want to get some from the RTAW community.

All the Laguna pumps I have had have not missed a beat, Very good on power and specs are great. The other items I can't comment on as I have never used them.

hey mate, looks great so far!!

just a quick question about the power outlets, how have you wired the 4 boards into the wall outlets, just with double adaptors? how many wall outlets have you used?

4 x 4 plug outlets wired together with the last one wired to a 2 meter extension lead which plugs into the wall power point. So effectively All I have out the back is one lead to power all the system underneath. In the last photo you can see down the bottom right where the power lead comes out. Very easy to do, but just incase I had my Electrician mate come over to check it out.

I will be doing the same idea in the hood for the lighting power if needed.

Just got a call, my tank arrives on friday!

This is a pick of my current Algae Turf Scrubber. I am going to refine this to work for the 7 fter.

Image

Update Time.

So I got alittle ahead of myself and whilst drilling the holes for my overflows where the wier is going to be, I got carried away with scaping around the return pipe.

So this structure is the 'main' large rock protruding the surface.

Pics of the tank with the rock scaping done. 1 big rock bomby hiding the return pipe with a small gully before the next rock formation leading up to the weir. I used Zip ties to hold rock to the pipe and am going to fill in some 'gaps' with aquaneedit putty. Around 60kg of sand provinding a 2-3 inch deep bed. very stable formation can't wait to get water in and play with the flow.

Also arriving today was my vertex Alpha 200 Skimmer, sicce multi5800lph return pump and some other bits and pieces.

Hi mate.

Your stand looks great. I have been getting quotes to do mine in steel and am blown away at the costs. With cladding later it would be over 2 grand.
As a carpenter I would prefer to use timber, But i had been told i couldnt,. So I am stoked to see you have.
What member sizes did you use? And how did you engineer it.
Cheers guys
Setup looks wicked too!

Hi Ollie, I used this as a reference http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showt ... ?t=1169964 and made a few adjustments to suit. i mainly used 90x45 and 190x45 + 16mm whiteboard(inside) and 12mm cladding(outside). It weighs a tonne! but is very very strong.

On a side note Tank now has water after a heap of tuning and leaks is running fine.

Sorry I have crap photos, hopefully will get a camera for my birthday or xmas from the kids hahah.

My lights should arrive in the next week or two I think. Also have ordered some really good live rock too, just need to wait for a good shipment. I already have a small amount of liverock in the tank to help it start to cycle so that when I get some better rock I hope it won't spike that badly. Altogether really happy with the way it is coming along.

25mm box 1.2mm aluminium (bunnings) with the plastic pieces to put it all together. Hinged and sheeted with 9mm mdf board. Very light weight, also have got some sticky sided foam to put around the top of the tank that it rests on. I have power units in the hood for the pumps and lights and power units in the cabinet for 'engine room stuff'.

Sorry I am no good at updates, hope you like it so far.

Cant wait to see it!

You have done a really neat job on that stand!!

BTW a lag 16 is an overkill. If it was me i'd go for a 6000 or 7500 ...more to save power that anything else. Ive currently got a lag 11 as a return and since ive taken out the frag tank its a struggle to keep the sand it one place..my next move will be to drop down to a 7500!

So been a long time between updates.

Almost finshed, just saving to get the last of my lighting.

Here are some pics.

These are for the FTS lovers.

Image

Image

Engine Room

Image

ATO and Dosing Liquids.

The ATO holds around 70L which lasts around 2 weeks give or take. Eack Dosing Compartment holds around 8 litres.

Image

Fuge and DSB with separte DSB of Miracle Mud.

Image

This is the next chamber with a bio pellet reactor , Skimmer and flowing through 200 micron filter socks before heading into to return area.

Image

The next shot is the return section. This is also where I have my outlet for water changes. When i do water changes I have a piece that flows directly into the display and the excess water gets pushed out at the return section

Image

Have more photos of coral but that can wait for another day. Thanks for looking.
