I think they are all confused by the extra space and are trying to fill it up as quickly as possible.

Back on topic, the eggs have developed some more and do look like snails to me.

More development on these guys.
In the video I mention that some of the eggs look unfertilised. On looking at the GIF of the photos, some of the clear eggs that I thought were unfertilised are also moving, so im guessing that these have been laid at different times.

The only animals that I have seen in the area of these eggs are the Nassarius snails. As Im posting this four separate snails are at the glass near one or more batches of the eggs.

Not really, its just some racks of tanks in a crowded garage.

The problem with photos is there is about 1 and 1.5m between the rows of tanks, so useful shots are a bit limited.

The following diagram shows the layout of the entire garage
Image

The green section is the usable walkway. Access is via the Right Top where there is a doorway and from the top left with a roller door on this end.
Chillers, buckets etc all impose on the walkway so its a bit of a mess.

From the Top Left to Top Right
Algae Cupboard, 2 x QT tanks, 1 x Kressle, 4 x Rotifers at ground level in white buckets, 3-6 x larvae in round black tubs at mid level, preheated water and RO at above head height (2 x 200L salt, 2 x 200L RO).

Left Bottom
Breeder Rack 1, L shape with 12 tanks and sump
Additional 5 tanks can be added if needed

Centre bottom
Breeder Rack 2, U shape with 19 tanks, with sumps (one live rock, one bioball tower and skimmer)
Below 1/2 of rack 4 x QT/independent tanks in line with freezer
Additional 8 tants can be added if needed
Freezer

Grow Out Tanks
16 grow out tanks, 8 of which are currently plumbed and operational, 8 need to be drilled
10 fry tanks initial small grow out
two sumps, one with skimmer and the other with live rock

Here is a photo of the initial part of the breeder 2 tanks when they were being setup (its really the only photo I have of the systems).

I dont really think so, or if they are, then they are doing a really bad job as there looks to be more eggs everyday :) .

Last night at about 11pm, I spotted two nassarius snails together in a section of the tank were there were no eggs at 6pm (short side of the tank near the front door), there was now one group of eggs with about 30 eggs and one of the snails tending it. By 1am there were four groups of eggs about 200 in total. The one snail was hanging around that area for the entire time, the other "legged it" once I turned the torch on. I didnt see the snail lay the eggs, but nothing of any size went anywhere near the area other than a sand sifting gobby that has annoyingly learned to hunt by torch light in the tank.

I agree that the pattern looks odd and not like other pictures of nassarius snail eggs I have seen. In total last night, there were three nassarius snails that were all "tending" to eggs. In each case, there were more eggs there this morning than there were last night. The new eggs are clear and the older eggs are dark, the same as the photo/video in the post above where I thought they were unfertalised.

Ill keep tring to see if I can catch them laying or find the culprit.

It depends on the fry

For clownfish, its generally rotifers then newly hatched baby brine shrimp (NHBBS) then as quickly as possible onto small pellets and then spectrum
For shrimp, its NHBBS then flake
For Banggai cardinalfish its NHBBS and then pellets
For Dotty backs its copepods, then rotifers and then NHBBS

Re: CaptCrash Breeding - eggs, eggs and more eggs

Postby CaptCrash » Sat 24 Aug, 2013 4:01 pm

Im not really sure why, but my new reef tank is providing a multitude of eggs of late. The eggs are pinkish to the eye.

Latest additions today

Image

The really weird part with these it the Red Line Cleaner shrimp seem to be protecting them, including chasing fish away.
They are also both walking into the eggs and then moving them around. But they don't seem to be eating them

Yup, everything is on the job at the moment. I think they are just trying to fill the new tank as quickly as possible.
Weirdly the red line cleaner shrimp from the heater explosion are still going. I lost the batch of peppermints though :furious: but Ill collect some more tonight/tomorrow night and have another go.

Re: CaptCrash Breeding - break in

Postby CaptCrash » Wed 23 Oct, 2013 5:02 pm

I had a really bad experience this morning.

Went out to feed my broodstock in the garage and the rear door was open. This was odd as I keep it shut to keep the temperature up.
Every power point and light in the garage was turned off (except for one light that is difficult to find). This includes the air pumps, returns etc.

I have lost quite a few of my breeding pairs, including three WA mandarins, two pairs of regular mandarins, four varieties of clowns and two pairs of spawning blue green chromis.

A few things were knocked over in the garage as well, so its obvious someone was in there.

I just dont understand why someone would do this.

Firstly, sorry to hear that mate. You are/were doing a great thing breeding and I hope it gets back on track with even better broodstock...

CaptCrash wrote:I just dont understand why someone would do this.

Mate, I'm echoing that. That's just malicious, plain and simple. I'm really hoping you guys find the person responsible or such, and if they were a part of this hobby it'd be horrible.

Disgusting.....
Was anything stolen? Or was this just a blatant attempt to kill your broodstock?
Hope you catch the bastards.

Dude... that is not cool by any standards... :(

Do you think someone was just after something, but didn't find anything of value so they turned everything off? If that was the case, these people just have no respect for life as we know it.
Maybe it's time to terminate their life....

That sucks mate. Someone in Perth doesn't like what you're doing with the breeding program. Did you call the cops? maybe they can get car or foot tracks or something.

You have to install security these days. Too many idiots out there who want something for nothing or who are just not happy with their own lives. I'd recommend this to any large scale type operations like yours and Pete (Oceanarium).

Thats messed up.
Is it too late to see if the cops can lift any prints off the switches?
Should be glossy enough.

What the hell is wrong with people. Sure hope it wasnt a hobbyist or competitor that envys your accomplishments.
I dont get how anyone could be anything but proud for what you've managed to do in the hobby.

[censored], sorry to hear that Darren.

Have you had any neighbours complaining about the setup? (e.g. noise) Any other people with motive?
It seems as though they knew what they were doing to turn these things off....

Also is the garage locked & back door locked normally??

Finally this may sound strange but is either you or your missus prone to sleep walking? I only ask as I have a cousin who has done similar things, leaving house and garage doors open...

Again, really sorry to hear that as you have been doing a bloody awesome job and this sort of malicious activity is completely unnecessary!!!!

your joking. some people are just a waste of oxygen, hope you find them and have them charged. it is also a case of animal cruelty which is a crime on its own, aswell as break and enter.

very sorry to hear about this, they should cut their hands off if caught.

No, nothing like that. Well not that I know of

Andre.Gibson wrote:Also is the garage locked & back door locked normally??

No, the back door does not have a lock. But its into a fully enclosed back yard/court yard so you have to climb over 6' fences to get there and most of the neighbours have dogs.

Andre.Gibson wrote:Finally this may sound strange but is either you or your missus prone to sleep walking? I only ask as I have a cousin who has done similar things, leaving house and garage doors open...

Nope, and the house doors were deadlocked so I would need to be really skillful in my sleep to achieve it.
