invert breeding tank

Postby ROB'SREEF » Sun 10 Jun, 2007 10:34 pm

hello, lately ive been thinking about the impact on natural reefs in the way of being able to sustain our hobby. I have also noticed the insane prices of shrimp in australia compared to the usa.
I realise that i am surely not the only one who has thought along these lines, and so i was wondering whether anyone knows of any plans of shrimp breeding on the small scale i.e. running a separate tank off of a main one.
things i would need to know are tank size, objects inside of it( live rock, breeding mops, other inverts for symbiotic relationships etc), flow rates, and feeding of the young.
I realise the young of many reef dwellers tend to be planktonic, so any views on this would be of a great help.

feeding of the young

This is the biggest key, the rest are easy, basically anything that holds them with bare tanks for the larvae.

The thing is that they can have very long larval durations 100+ days this in itself creates problems, and the 2 people i know who have successfully raise Cleaner shrimps (Lysmata amboinensis) to settlement it took 4-5 months in both cases.

Ther eis a book on rearing and training peppermint shrimps, i surges tyou find this book as it has lots of tips for the easier species that only take 1 month to rear.

Is the book on "How to raise and train your peppermint shrimp" by April Kirkendoll ?
I picked up a copy from a notice I put on the FS forum.
I tried to get a copy from the local bookstores, but they suggested Amazom [PITA].
But the book is a good read.
Have you read the breaders forum on RC, there's a lengthy post on breeding shrimp, Redliners I think
Cheers
